Joke of the Month - How does the man on the Moon get his hair cut? Answer is below

Link of the Month - I have learned more interesting things while browsing this site than I have anywhere.

Business is booming these days with the addition of some great new customers. We are adding additional staff and increasing hours for personnel. We are still far from our maximum capacity, but it is great to be growing in these challenging times.

This month I will highlight some of my favorite machines. It is amazing how rapidly the technology of manufacturing has changed over the years. When I think back to how things were when I set up my first punch press in 1975 I think, sheesh I am old, then I think how glad I am to not have to use those ancient machines anymore.

My Favorite Machine
Linx Printer
This machine is my favorite. The Linx industrial ink jet printer. It works like magic to apply the partmark to all of our products. It uses industrial InkJet technology to direct a stream of dots onto the parts when they are passed under the print head. To see it work is almost unbelievable. The part passes under the print head and Wa La you have a perfect computer generated partmark in a split second. The ink dries faster than you can touch it. The control can be easily programmed to make different fonts, different size letters, characters or symbols. It can do multiple lines of text at the same time in one pass. Before we purchased this machine we had to set up little rubber stamps and painstakingly line up the tiny rubber letters and use a finicky inkpad that always seemed to have too much or too little ink on it. To set this machine up it only takes a few seconds were off to the races.

An added benefit of this machine is the ability to print on curved, convex or concave surfaces. By having the ability to change the font size we can print on very tiny parts as well. Slippery surfaces are no longer a problem, with old style rubber stamps it was hard to keep from smearing the partmark on surfaces like zinc plating or Delrin machined parts.

The Workhorse of the Industry
Amada Turret Punch
The machine that really revolutionized the industy is the Turret Press. This machine is CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled). It moves the material within its work envelope at speeds of 2783 Inches Per Minute and can hold repeatability of +/-.001 (one thousandth of an inch). The Turret holds up to 56 individual punches, some up to 4 1/2 inches in diameter. Two of the tool Stations are "Auto Indexable" This means that they can be programmed to turn the punch 360 degrees during the puching operation. Auto Index stations made life so much easier for making parts because it allows us to make parts that have complex angles at any degree with ease. Our Machines can all punch with 30 tons of force. This allows us to punch up to 1/4 inch thick steel sheets.

We have four turret punches now. They are all Amada machines with identical turrets. This allows any program we create to be able to go into any punch. This really helps to keep the flow going in this area of our shop. Our largest machine can punch sheets up to 50" wide and by using the "Automatic Clamp Reposition" function we can punch sheets of any length.

Before turret presses were created all punching operations had to be done by hand using a variety of machines that required the operator to manually move the material and accuratly move it into position under the punch. Ugh, I am so glad those days are behind.
